Policy Engagement

Back to theme overview

Introduction

Most of the civil society organizations supporting farmers in Uganda have been traditionally associated with service delivery. However, a number of issues affecting farmers are of a policy nature and need intervention of government policy. In addition, policy issues affecting farmer entrepreneurship are being formulated and debated at national and local levels. This calls for an active involvement of the APF network as key partners working with small scale farmers. The APF network will therefore build a strong advocacy platform that will contribute to creating a conducive national policy environment that favors farmer entrepreneurship in Uganda.

Collaborating organisations

Coordination of this group is in the hands of Stella Lutalo of PELUM Uganda. The APF Uganda policy group comprises of PELUM, UNFFE, JESE, SATNET, ACORD, OXFAM, Wageningen, VEDCO and SNV. In 2010, Environmental Alert and UEEF also joined the group, bringing the total number to 11.The group is open to admit any other like minded organizations from the APF Uganda platform and beyond.

Activities

  • Information dissemination on policies that support farmer entrepreneurship (APF-Uganda platform used for regular sharing of information - see further reading materials below)
  • Review of and input to policy processes and debates on farmer entrepreneurship (and linkage to other APF groups)
  • Participation in ESFIM-UNFFE study into the NAADS that farmers want
