Promoting farmer entrepreneurship
Introduction
Present research (NARO system) and advisory services (NAADS) in the public sector are not very chain-oriented but rather production-oriented. More market-oriented smallholder production requires a different type of services and fluent interaction with the private sector. This thematic area under APF-Uganda aims to work on accessible technical and advisory services for farmers; and farmers learning through multi-stakeholder platforms.
Collaborating organisations
Collaboration among APF network members is currently on two sub-sectors: rice and oilseed.
For oilseed: Coordination is with the OSSUP platform (incl. UOSPA, Mukwano etc.),SNV, WUR, and Makerere University. This activity pre-dates the APF country focus on Uganda and is embedded in the Value Chain for Pro Poor Development Action Research Programme (finalized).
For rice: Coordination is in hand of BRAC Uganda. KIT is supporting this initiative and links have been established with NAADS, NARO, and the Rice Industry Secretariat. Other organisations linked to this are: DANIDA, UOSPA, Environmental Alert, and UNFFE.
