Promoting farmer entrepreneurship
Efforts to promote and develop Fairtrade movement are being encouraged in the world and particularly Africa. The Africa Fairtrade Network Secretariat is located next door in Nairobi. As other countries are benefiting from this initiative, what is its status in Uganda? Do we understand its principles? Which agency is spearheading the activities? Could it be another alternative to promote development? Over to you members....

There are 12 Fairtrade certified cooperatives in Uganda. Six in coffee, four in tea, one in vanilla and one in dried fruits.
Fairtrade is certainly an important way to promote development. Fairtrade connects disadvantaged producers and consumers, promotes fairer trading conditions and empowers producers to combat poverty, strengthen their position in the chain and take more control over their lives.
In order for Agri-Hub members to get an understanding of what Fairtrade is, I would like to refer to www.fairtrade.net. Here you will find useful information about the concept of Fairtrade, its standards, how to apply for Fairtrade certification and the way producers are supported.
Kind regards,
